Riverside Detour (Open)

Recommended Posts

If there was one thing Akagi enjoyed in the new village compared to the old one, it was the river. While Rikuhi had no problem with water supply, it was underground and distributed properly according to need. Kawa, however, had the beautiful river it was named after. While he couldn't stay at the main river itself, since it double as a transportation pathway, the river did branch into smaller streams spread throughout the village. It was at one such riverbank that Akagi was currently lazing around.

In was one of those rare moments where he wasn't busy training, going on missions or even helping build the village. Normally he would just stay at home or at the library reading a book but the weather was perfect today. It felt like a waste to just stay inside. His walk started from the Aleena River which he followed until he ended up in a relatively secluded portion of the training grounds. Content to enjoy the scenery for now, Akagi sat down on the grass, his feet crossed together as he watched the water move along the bank. Once in a while, he'd pick up a pebble within reach and threw it in the river. Not even skipping it along the surface, just throwing it in and watching the splash and waves it created.

Rayne walked along in her casual outfit by the riverside. It was a bright sunny day, and because of the river, one could hardly tell they were actually in the middle of a desert. Well, perhaps that was a bit hopeful, but Rayne was basically at the beach today, despite the ocean being hundreds of miles away. It was a good thing too, she had been stuck inside the office all day. Her! The Kage! She needed time to train in order to stay as fit as she's always been. Did they think these muscles and abilities would just maintain themselves!?

With her heightened senses, she could see that there was someone at the shinobi grounds she was going to. From the looks of it, just a young boy. He was throwing rocks into the river. Perhaps it was just her, but she much preferred skipping rocks. She picked one up and moved silently towards him. Still just a casual walk, but a practiced stealth none the less. Eventually, when she was close enough, she threw the rock across the surface. It skipped a few times diagonally, eventually crossing his plane of view.

She continued walking forward. "Hello young one. Care to play a game with me?" she said, stopping when she neared him.

Every pebble thrown by Akagi in the river caused a small splash and tiny waves to dance across the surface. Being a single point of impact, it did not last long and pretty soon the surface would still once more. Just as he was about to throw another pebble, a rock skipped across the Akagi's field of vision. It caused some confusion as Akagi knew he was supposed to be alone and he didn't detect anyone approach. It was either he was very relaxed or the person was really skilled at concealing themselves at the last minute. Before he could search for the origin of the rock himself, the person decided to make herself, judging the voice, known.

Being quite familiar with older women wanting to play games (a story from the past), Akagi was about to voice his answer but the words died in his throat. Anyone in Kawagakure would recognize her, even before Kawagakure existed. After all, who what kind of shinobi would not recognize their commander?

"Lu- Taiyoukage-sama!" Akagi bowed  out of respect for the woman. White hair and aura that screamed leader, this was definitely the woman every Kawa-shinobi answered to. No wonder Akagi never felt her arriving. "I did not realize you would be using these grounds today!"

Akagi should probably calm down as one could tell from the Kage's attire and posture that she wasn't here on business. Though that fact may have brought out more questions as to why she was asking someone like Akagi to play a game with her. It wasn't an order but only an idiot with a death-wish decline an offer from such a person despite how strange it was.

"What do you require, Taiyoukage-sama?" Akagi asked with a slightly nervous tone.

Rayne chuckled at the young shinobi's surprise. She supposed it was natural to be stunned by power, especially if it was far greater than your own was. She didn't really get to be stunned by power. It would've killed her had she stayed still. Peace and quiet was such a luxury, even now. Best to allow the young ones to enjoy it for as long as she could make it last. While toughening them for the jobs that could lie ahead of course.

"It's quite alright. I always delight in meeting those I lead and serve. As for what I want, well, I would like to train. But regular training is kinda boring. That's where the game comes in."

Rayne took out a scroll from inside her sleeves and unsealed heavy weights from them. They were ankle, wrist, and body suit weights, meant for her of course. She also unsealed two Tennis rackets and a tennis ball.

"Tell me. Have you ever played Tennis before?"

If not, Rayne would explain the rules of the game. Although there was to be a change to the normal rules.

"Just so you know, you may use any jutsu you desire in order to score points... So long as the purpose of the jutsu is not to kill the opponent anyway," she added with a smile. "So, would you like to play?"

If the young man said yes, she would hand him a racket and the ball. "You can serve first." She would then go to her side of the court, which was magically always there to begin with and near enough to the river to still hear it coursing along. Along the way, she would suit up in her weights. Once she was ready she called out to him.

"I'm all set! Good luck and may the best shinobi win!"

It was only shock that kept Akagi firmly rooted in place; and a little bit of nervousness. Despite what other shinobi might have thought, being in a clan did not automatically equate knowing how to compose yourself in front of a high executive body of any organization, much less your own very village. He hadn't even met his own clan's head and having your formative education in a "neutral" school didn't allow much interaction even with the previous Kage. True he had greeted the Taiyoukage personally before but that was back then when she was just Jounin Rayne Lucea. Plus emergency situations had a tendency to disregard formalities.

For now, Akagi tried to mimic the crystals he used so much and project a perfect exterior while his insides felt like a sandstorm. Hopefully it would be enough to prevent him from committing and faux-pas in front of his Commander.

"I have read and seen it but never participated in the sport, Taiyoukage-sama."

Of course, Akagi had accepted her offer to play despite being a complete novice at the sport. It would take a really firm backbone to refuse your Kage. It didn't help that the Taiyoukage had allowed an almost anything goes rule, short of directly harming your opponent. That left the her with an even bigger advantage than Akagi could ever take advantage of. Despite whatever worries Akagi still may have, he still accepted the racket and ball. He had to put the remaining rocks he held in his pockets. If his Kage was planning to play with weights, then he could live with a few additional grams of weight.

Akagi took his spot on the tennis court which had been there all along. He would have to trace back the path he took to get here again to find out where exactly in he village this place was. Thankfully the court was empty, though Akagi held suspicion that he wasn't truly alone with the Taiyoukage. There was probably an set of ANBU he couldn't detect lurking somewhere probably enjoying the show. Akagi nodded when his Kage announced she was ready, not trusting his voice at the moment.

Trying his best to mimic what he had seen, Akagi tossed the ball in the air and hit it with the racket, sending the ball towards the Taiyoukage's side. It was very beginner attempt at such a sport.
